Greek Fest New Orleans 2026 Takes Place On Memorial Day

This milestone event promises to be a spectacular showcase of Greek culture, tradition, and culinary delights that you won’t want to miss. Lose yourself in the swirling skirts and rhythmic steps of Hellenic dancers, embark on a visual pilgrimage through a breathtaking Cathedral tour, and surrender to the intoxicating aromas of authentic Greek cuisine. Two Places to Spend the Day
For families who want a quiet destination outside the formal ceremonies, two stand out.
Chalmette National Cemetery, a few miles east of downtown, holds more than 15,000 graves spanning the War of 1812 through Vietnam. The cemetery sits next to the Chalmette Battlefield, where Andrew Jackson defended the city in 1815. Memorial Day hours are 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The Friday before, volunteers place a small American flag at every headstone, so by Monday morning, the rows are a striking field of red, white, and blue. Walking those rows is a quiet, self-directed way to mark the holiday with an aging parent—address: 8606 W. St. Bernard Highway, Chalmette.
The National WWII Museum on Magazine Street is the country’s official tribute to the generation many of our residents belong to. Beyond the daytime Memorial Day Commemoration on Monday, the museum’s nighttime Expressions of America show projects 90-foot images and personal letters from the WWII generation onto the campus facades. WWII veterans receive free admission year-round, and military personnel and their families enter free from May 16 through Labor Day through the Blue Star Museums program. If your parent or grandparent served, this is the weekend the museum was built for.
Spending Time Outdoors
Memorial Day weather in southeast Louisiana is warm and humid, with afternoon highs in the upper 80s. Mornings and evenings are the most comfortable windows, especially with an aging parent.
New Orleans City Park offers picnicking under the live oaks at Big Lake, the carousel, and the Botanical Garden, with plenty of shaded ground for a slower-paced afternoon. The Lakefront along Lake Pontchartrain catches a breeze most days, and the steps along the seawall make for an easy walk. Bayou St. John, just upriver from the Greek Fest grounds, is a long, walkable green corridor where neighbors gather all weekend. A po-boy from Parkway Bakery and a folding chair are all you need for an afternoon on the bayou.
BBQ in New Orleans
Memorial Day asks for barbecue. Blue Oak BBQ in Mid-City and Central City BBQ in Central City are the two we would send you to first, both with shaded patios, reliable plates, and the kind of slower pace that works for an extended family meal. Reservations book up over the holiday weekend, so call ahead or use OpenTable to book a table in the metro.
Honoring a Veteran Parent or Grandparent in Residential Care
For families whose parent or grandparent served, Memorial Day is a particular kind of weekend. The man who flew over Korea, the woman who waited out the Pacific war in a stateside factory — they may now be in residential care. The weekend’s meaning has not changed for them, even if the way they observe it has.
A short visit can carry a lot. Look through old photographs together. Ask about a brother, a cousin, or a friend who served alongside them. If they have a service cap or a folded flag, take it down from the shelf. Residents in memory care often respond strongly to specific, familiar objects and to the music of their era, and Sousa marches and 1940s big band recordings can open doors that conversation alone cannot.
If your parent is in residential care and you want to mark the weekend together, ask the care team what they have planned. Many of our residents host small commemorations and family visits around the holiday. The point is not a big production. The point is to sit with the person who served, or who waited at home for someone who did, and let them know the story is remembered.
Conclusion
Memorial Day is a weekend for both remembrance and the quiet pleasure of being together with family.
